ITE Project Showcased to the Duke of Edinburgh
Simply Interesting!

All this time, it has been receiving attention from establishments whose beneficiaries have gained useful maintenance skills, but on 17 Mar 06, it caught the eye of neither ordinary citizens nor visitors. Instead, Simply Cool , a teaching aid developed by lecturers and students from ASHRAE Student Branch ITE College East received the attention of a royal guest - His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.

HRH Prince Philip, who was in Singapore with Queen Elizabeth II for a brief official visit, was a special guest at the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) Exhibition held at the Esplanade Park. The Exhibition was held in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme worldwide. Singapore's NYAA originated from this Scheme.

Simply Cool was chosen among the numerous projects conceptualised by Singaporean youths under the NYAA Scheme. On display at the Exhibition were 11 unique projects funded by the Scheme, and which had greatly benefited the community at large.

Simply Useful
Describing the project, Mr Derrick Cheong, Lecturer/Building Services Technology, and the Student Branch Advisor said: "The project was designed to help young probationers learn the basic air-conditioning maintenance skills, hence its name. Compact and portable, it helps our students impart essential maintenance skills to their charges, who in turn, have the renewed chance to contribute to society."

Among the skills learnt from using Simply Cool were the vacuuming and cleaning of evaporator coil and fins, the removal and cleaning of air filters, and the cleaning of condensing units. Upon completion of 16 hours of learning, the probationers would then apply their skills to service multi-split air-conditioning units in the homes for the aged, under the guidance of ITE students.

Simply Motivated
In recognition of the contributions by ITE students, Mr James Soh, Executive Director, NYAA Council, remarked: "The NYAA participants from the ITE Colleges are a motivated group of young people who are willing to use their technical skills and time to help the community. I have great respect for this group of young people as they are dependable and have contributed effectively to make our society a better one."
